A solar project should include BESS from the beginning when storage is required by regulation or connection rules, changes the project’s commercial product, captures otherwise lost energy, or provides enough additional system and customer value to justify its lifecycle cost. Even when installation is deferred, storage readiness should be considered during the initial electrical and site design.
Retrofitting BESS can require a new connection study, additional land, switchgear, transformers, protection and control-system changes. Installing it too early, however, can lock a project into an uneconomic size or technology before the value and market rules are clear.
#### 1. It is required
Certain programmes or connection arrangements may prescribe storage.
For firm solar supply under CRESS, current guidance requires the BESS to be directly connected and sized at least at 50% of the relevant solar capacity for four hours. Storage should be included where capacity, firming, demand-response or other services are sufficiently defined and bankable.
