Smart meters and timely electricity data provide the measurement layer for more accurate billing, time-based tariffs, demand flexibility, faster outage detection and better planning for solar, batteries and electric vehicles. Malaysia can gain much more value when meter data is connected to customer tools and grid operations. Half-hourly readings are not truly instantaneous, and meters alone do not create savings without useful signals, automation and trusted data access.

They record interval consumption and communicate readings remotely, reducing estimated bills and manual visits. TNB states that customers can view half-hourly usage through its portal and app.

2. Interval data supports time-based tariffs

Customers can compare consumption with peak and off-peak prices and move suitable loads. Peninsular Malaysia's tariff structure effective from July 2025 revised and expanded Time of Use arrangements, creating a clearer price signal for eligible customers.

3. Data can support grid planning and operations

Aggregated readings can reveal feeder load shapes, rooftop-solar export, voltage issues and emerging EV-charging clusters. Outage-management systems can use meter communications to confirm loss and restoration of supply.

4. Flexible resources need measurement and verification

Demand response, virtual power plants and smart charging require evidence that a customer changed consumption when requested. Meter resolution and latency must match the service; billing data that arrives later may be adequate for settlement but not real-time control.

5. Customers need actionable tools

Raw interval data is difficult to use. Alerts, appliance controls, benchmarks, forecasts and clear tariff information can convert readings into decisions, while automation can act within customer-set limits.

6. Governance is part of the infrastructure

Rules should cover purpose, consent, retention, cybersecurity, access by authorised third parties, correction of errors and protection of vulnerable consumers. Data sharing should enable useful services without turning detailed household or business patterns into an uncontrolled asset.
